How to Get Hired at Comma Copywriters

There’s a reason why so many applications fill our inbox each year — and why dozens of Comma writers choose to stick around for years. Comma Copywriters offers a unique experience for writers that is distinct and different from the traditional hustle-and-grind-on-your-own “freelance” experience. Our team thrives in an environment where flexibility, freedom, and friendliness fuel our work.

Whatever your reason is for wanting to join Team Comma, there are several steps you can take to gain our attention and trust. Get your relationship with Comma Copywriters off to a good start by following our hiring team’s best tips for getting hired.

Overview of the hiring process

At Comma, after your application is reviewed, there is a three-step process to being hired as a Lead Writer. First, we invite you to a one-on-one interview with a member of Comma’s leadership team. While we come prepared to get to know you, we see this as a “two-way interview” because we want applicants to ask great questions to make sure the way we work is a good fit.

Next, we ask for a (paid) writing sample. We give you specific instructions and a topic. Plan on one or two rounds of revisions — this is an exercise for us to see how you work, your writing style, how you apply feedback, and your ability to hit a deadline.

If that sample piece goes well, we invite you to a group interview with at least two members of our Comma Leadership Team. Throughout the hiring process, you’ll have a greater likelihood of being selected if you do the following, which we dig into below:

  • Pay attention to details

  • Showcase your best work

  • Know your limitations and writing goals

  • Be open and willing to receive feedback

  • Do your research

  • Earn our trust

  • Own your individual talents

Pay attention to details

If you’ve perused our client testimonials, you may have noticed Comma’s clients are pretty thrilled with the work we provide. To offer superior content and service, Comma writers follow directions. From transforming a client’s vision into a polished piece, to providing fellow writers with careful and constructive feedback, Comma team members are detail-oriented.

We expect the same attention to detail from our applicants. So, how can you stand out? Provide all the information and documents requested on our application. Should you be invited to write a sample blog post for us, study our style guide, incorporate all the elements provided, and (please) follow instructions.

Showcase your best work

We require applicants to share two writing samples with us. Remember, you’re being hired as a writer   so include samples that showcase your ability to write quality content! The writing samples you share should be professional, error-free, and well-researched. We work with a diverse group of clients, so we love to see variety in your writing.

Part of our job is to write quality content worth reading that drives traffic to our clients’ websites. We do this by using relevant keywords, incorporating links to reputable sources, and sharing internal links to the client’s published content. Show that you know how to properly apply these techniques.

Know your limitations and income goals

We strive to be flexible with our team members and offer assignments that fit your availability. We give a lot of freedom to our team to choose the projects they want to take on. That being said, we hold our team to a high standard of accountability. We put a lot of trust in our writers. In return, we ask that our writers are open and transparent with us. Be honest with Comma —  and yourself — about your availability for Comma assignments. How many hours a week can you truly dedicate to Comma work without giving up your life? (We’re a “life first” company and want you to be happy!)

You don’t want to overbook yourself with assignments if you truly don’t have time to give to Comma. Your work and happiness will suffer. Before an interview with a Comma leader, consider how much time you can actually commit to Comma each week and be prepared to share that answer. We’ll also ask how much money you’re looking to make in a month.

Be open and willing to receive feedback

The work we produce for clients doesn’t belong to Comma or our writers, but is intellectual property of our clients. Though we put care and attention into every piece, the client’s needs go before our own creative vision. Whether writing or editing a piece, we ask for “no egos” in your Comma work, as we collectively  aim to help clients save time and build thought leadership.

The Comma Brand Promise guarantees that two sets of professional eyes review every piece of content before it’s delivered to the client. What does this mean for Comma writers? We peer review each other’s work —  a process involving respect and humility. These qualities, when paired with feedback, allow us to grow as writers.

Want to join our team of writers? Leave your ego at the door and be open to receive feedback.

Do your research

You wouldn’t invest in a car or house without doing some research — so why wouldn’t you also learn about a company you might invest time and energy in supporting? We want to hire people who share our values and passions. Learn what those values and passions are with a little research.

Check out Comma’s blog posts, YouTube videos, and social media pages (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn) to learn more about our history, culture, and mission. Should you interview with us, come prepared to ask any questions you have about our company and the way we work as a team. When you commit to Comma, we commit to you.

Earn our trust

Every interaction you have with Comma, from your email correspondence to your phone interview, is an opportunity to showcase your professionalism. Proofread what you write, use proper grammar, and demonstrate quality communication skills. To us, every word counts!

If we see that you’re unable to write a cohesive email, we can’t trust you to professionally represent Comma when working with clients. The same goes for the way you carry yourself in phone and video conversations. We want to see applicants give our hiring team the same respect and attention expected by our clients.

Own your individual talents

One benefit that makes our team so successful is the variety of our skills and backgrounds. There is no  “perfect mold” to join Team Comma —  in fact, we are known for our commitment to inclusion. Be proud of your unique experience and the talents you have.

We are very selective about the writers we choose to hire. Your ability to write well is important, but so is your authenticity. The last thing we want to do is hire someone who has no interest in our company and culture. As you apply for a position with Comma, help us know why you want to work with us and why YOU would be a good fit.

Comma wouldn’t exist without a team of talented writers. Come share your talents and experience with us. Visit our Careers page to learn more about flexible, contract, remote position with Comma and submit an application. We look forward to learning more about you!
