Team Comma is just as committed to making the world a better place as we are to developing excellent content for our clients. Every year, Comma commits a portion of profits to organizations that support literacy and education programs for children and adults. We’ve teamed up with Kurandza, a non-profit social enterprise on a mission to empower Mozambique through investing in the next generation of female leaders.

In the following Q&A, we get to know more about the amazing work of Kurandza in speaking with one of its founders, Elisabetta.

Q: For anyone who doesn't know, please tell us a little bit about Kurandza?

A: Kurandza is a grassroots non-profit organization that uses education to empower women and girls to become leaders in their communities. We focus our efforts on girls in rural Mozambique, and currently provide educational sponsorships to over 200 children. We run the annual #IStandForGirls campaign every September to raise sponsorships for the next school year. "Kurandza" means "to love" in Changana, the local language of the villages where we work, and love is our biggest value! Everything we do, we strive to do it with love.

Q:  What led to Kurandza being founded?

Elisabetta and Percina, founders of Kurandza.

Elisabetta and Percina, founders of Kurandza.

A: I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mozambique for three years! That's where I met Kurandza's co-founder, Percina. When my Peace Corps assignment was over, I knew that my time in Mozambique wasn't finished. I had created a strong relationship with the community and wanted to continue working with them. That's when I created Kurandza and worked alongside Percina to make it into what it is today.

Q:  How many children has Kurandza been able to help since it began?

A: We currently have 200 girls and 5 boys in our program, and about 100 of them have been in our program since 2017. We're hoping to increase this to 250 within the next year!

Q: Tell us about the partnership between Kurandza and Team Comma.

A: Team Comma is our biggest Sponsor! Currently, Team Comma is sponsoring the education of 22 of our girls. In 2018, Crystalee joined #IStandForGirls and sponsored 2 girls, in 2019 that increased to 10 girls, and this year it increased to 22 girls! For every client Team Comma brings on, they donate to sponsor one year of schooling to a girl in Mozambique. We are so grateful for everything Team Comma does to help our girls succeed, and we wouldn't be where we are today without this partnership.

Q: How can someone support Kurandza today?

A: Someone can support Kurandza in three ways:

1) By becoming a monthly donor and joining our #IStandForGirls community by sponsoring the education of a girl: www.kurandza.org/istandforgirls

2) Making a one-time donation of any size that helps us fill gaps in funding for our education program: www.kurandza.org/girls-education-fund
