Finding Career Fulfillment After Breast Cancer: Lauren's Story

I’ve juggled many freelance roles over a nearly 20-year career, but my stint with Comma thus far has been far from ordinary — in the best way possible. As I reflect on the last 20 months with the company serving as a Lead Writer, a few standout themes and experiences come to mind.

A Value-Driven Company

Finding a company that fosters a positive work environment is essential. Why? At its core, a nurturing work environment prioritizes physiological safety. In this type of work environment, people feel empowered to voice their opinions, ideas, and concerns. They can admit mistakes without feeling criticized or judged. This sense of safety fosters trust, mutual respect, and a supportive atmosphere that ultimately has a profound impact on team performance and well-being.

At Comma, our company values laid a strong foundation for a positive work environment from day one. Our “Life First” outlook, as exemplified by our founder and fearless leader Crystalee Beck, reinforces our belief that team members will thrive when they have the support and flexibility to live a fulfilling life. As a recent breast cancer survivor and someone who hopes to become a mother soon, this value is priceless. Our health and families cannot be replaced. Work will always be there. Full stop. That became crystal-clear to me when I was undergoing cancer treatment. There are no guarantees in life.

However, this prioritization doesn’t mean we don’t take our craft seriously. In fact, another Comma core value is all about taking accountability, showing up, and owning your work. I’ve witnessed dedication, commitment, professionalism, and accountability from my colleagues countless times. It’s inspiring, to say the least, especially in a remote environment. I don’t take this culture of excellence for granted. We’re all better for it.

The same can be said of my relationships with my team members. I’ve connected organically outside of work for virtual coffee meetups to discuss matters ranging from health to volunteerism. There’s a lot to be said for having meaningful conversations around mutual concerns and interests. (Thank you, Zoom!) Comma is the unifying force and the common denominator across the miles. And I do mean miles. We have writers, editors, and project managers in all U.S. time zones!

At the community level, I’m constantly humbled by and in awe of the multi-faceted nature of our Comma team. People are so much more than their careers, and I appreciate that Comma encourages us to share and show up as our whole selves. That looks different for each person, of course. On a lighter note, sometimes that means exchanging recipes, health tips, or even fabulous thrift store finds. (I’m looking at you, Crystalee, with that funky red blouse!) Whatever the connection point, my life has been enriched by new and different perspectives.

Bringing Stories to Life

Speaking of perspectives, my first assignment with Comma introduced me to the executive leadership behind a Utah-based provider of tax, audit, and advisory services. Squire had engaged Comma’s team to produce a series of feature articles to be included in a magazine celebrating its 50th anniversary. The aim was to capture the company’s past, present, and future.

I worked with Squire’s team over a few months to bring stories to life that reflected themes like personal connection, thoughtful innovation, and expansion of services. In hindsight, I was set up for success for a few reasons. You could say this assignment had “my name” on it. I’ve produced feature stories since my high school journalism days. A journalist at heart, this is an area where I shine and derive satisfaction.

The nature of the work provided an opportunity to weave the human element into stories that might be one-dimensional otherwise. That’s a challenge I relish, no matter the industry or client. Writing content for the sake of it doesn’t do anyone any favors. However, capturing a professional's career's depth, scope, and richness — as I did for Squire — feels like a higher calling. In this case, the client interviews helped me unlock insights that wouldn’t be so evident otherwise. I’m pleased with the final product and more importantly, we exceeded the client’s expectations.

On the Comma side, these pieces were a great introduction to the company’s workflow and expectations. Managing Editor & Lead Writer Danielle Yruegas and Client Success Manager Sarah Acheson guided me along the way and were equally professional and patient as I found my bearings as a green Comma newbie. I can’t say enough positive things about our working experience. Fortunately, this project led to others like it, and I continue to approach each one with the same gusto as the first. There’s nothing like starting on a high note!

Writing the Next Chapter Together

Looking to the future, I’m eager to see what professional opportunities arise as Comma continues down this dynamic path of growth and success. There’s much to be gained from a diverse array of assignments that challenge and encourage me to hone my craft. Embracing the philosophy of lifelong learning, I look forward to ongoing training opportunities to expand my skill set and broaden my personal and professional horizons.

At the same time, I also welcome collaboration with additional talented colleagues, each bringing their experiences and insights to the table. I believe our passion for creativity and innovation will continue to guide us as we write the next chapter together. #TeamCommaforlife!
