Crêpes & Content Chats: Comma Celebrates 8 Years in Business

On April 18, 2024, we brought a taste of Paris to Salt Lake City for Comma’s 8th anniversary. In honor of the 2024 Olympics, we fully Comma-mitted to this year’s “Crêpes and Content Chats” theme, featuring fresh crêpes, matching berets, performing mime, french mood music, and an eight-foot balloon Eiffel Tower.

Why do we host this annual event? Beyond business birthday milestones, we want to support and inspire our local community by presenting some of Utah’s top marketing voices. Couldn’t make it? Here’s a quick recap of the event along with key insights shared by Comma’s founder, Crystalee Beck, and our guest speakers.

Merci Beaucoup To Our 2024 Content Chat Speakers

The heart of the evening centered around our esteemed panel of marketing experts who graciously shared their expertise and wisdom with our guests. We are honored to partner with each of these individuals who continue to shape the future of marketing and business in Utah.

Mark Boothe — Domo

“Content is only as good as the distribution strategy behind it,” shared Mark Boothe, CMO at Domo. Mark has an incredible career track record over the past 15 years, with stints at Adobe, Instructure, and now in the top marketing role at Domo.

During Mark’s presentation, he shared how Domo’s customer experience was lacking in past years and how he and his team used CONTENT and COMMUNITY to create a customer-centric hub where Domo customers are supported and recognized. This initiative included:

  • Going on a Connections Tour across the country to meet customers face-to-face.

  • Creating Domo Ovation Awards, which had 350 submissions from nine countries and 60 finalists recognized.

  • Using quality content to build significant customer loyalty and growth.

Melanie Paris Jones — Utah Business

Melanie Paris Jones, Editor-in-Chief at Utah Business, shared the power of knowing your audience, and how to bring them to the table to guide your content ideas. A crucial takeaway lesson she learned early on in her career, and one that every entrepreneur can relate to, was this: To effectively deliver any message, your audience must be REAL to you. Take the time to know them and learn from them.

John Huntinghouse — TAB Bank

John Huntinghouse, VP of Marketing at TAB Bank, shared his touching professional story about the power of TRUST in relationships, and how making space for crazy ideas leads to winning teams. Rather than listing off the many awards his marketing team has won, John invited us to experience HOW his team won them.

John instructed the audience to get into pairs, with one person tasked to pitch an idea. The receiver was then instructed to say “No, because…” to all of their partner's suggestions. You can imagine how deflating this felt. Then, he had us swap places. This time, the receiver was instructed to say “YES, and…” The energy in the room was electric.

“This is how an award-winning team works,” John said. “They are trusted to bring all ideas to the table, including the wildest ones.”

Jenny Spalding — Walker Edison

Jenny Spalding, Senior Director of Commercialization, shared her perspective on the Walker Edison customer journey, and how brands can stand out with unique content. To be an effective marketer, you must keep the customer’s problems and concerns at the forefront. To do this well,

  • ASK questions (and ANSWER them) before the customer brings them up.

  • Provide content that guides your customers.
