"Working for Comma Gives Me Freedom." | Comma Culture Series with Bridie

Bridie Bowerbank, Managing Editor at Comma

The Comma Copywriters team has the freedom to find the balance between their professional and personal lives that’s right for them. That’s exactly what Bridie has experienced while writing for Comma — and why she loves being part of the team as a managing editor.

Not only can Bridie work where and when she wants, but she’s also free to pursue projects on topics that are completely new to her. Expanding her comfort zone feels possible because of Comma’s commitment to building a community where humility, thoughtful feedback, and growing as a team are valued and actively encouraged.

I love working for Comma because it gives me the freedom in all aspects of life. I have the freedom to pick who I want to write for and what work I want to do. I also have the freedom to work where I want, when I want. And that's so unique in the workspace today. Not many companies really value having that freedom and balance in your life that we value so much. Working for Comma helps me as a writer and as a creator because it pushes me past my limits and out of my comfort zone. I get exposed to lots of different topics and subjects that I normally wouldn't get to work on in my normal space where I'm comfortable. So, I get pushed, and I get to grow and experience lots of new things.

Comma gives me the freedom to really be able to balance my life personally and professionally a lot better. I get to pick where I want to work, when I want to work, and I get to balance and do how much work I want to work. So I'm really happy in picking that balance, finding it between it, and picking and valuing my time where it needs to be. I think what makes Comma unique is really the people. We have a great team of writers that are really working to develop a culture that is supportive and instructive. Whenever I get feedback from a teammate, I know that they're really just trying to help me grow and be better. They're not really trying to outgun me or move me out of position to get something better. We're all really working as a team to help each other grow and be better.

I think of all the Comma values, humility stands out most to me. Because it creates a really safe space to try new things and be humble when you fail but also when you're helping others succeed. Anytime I receive criticism, it's always positive, and it's always given to help me grow. And it helps me remain humble but then also be humble in giving that feedback to others so that I can really help support them in their own personal growth too.

I think what other prospective writers should know is that we really are people first. We really care and are invested in the lives of our co-workers, and if you have a personal challenge, we're really willing to work with that. And it's a great unique space to be able to have that freedom to speak with Crystalee or your editor and manage and work around those challenges that come up that in any other job, you wouldn't have that creative ability to work around it and be flexible.
